POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Certified Respiratory Care Specialist (Pediatric and Neonatal) is an advanced-level healthcare professional dedicated to the specialized treatment of infants and children during critical care transport scenarios. This role requires close collaboration with critical care transport nurses and medical control physicians to ensure optimal patient care. Exceptional communication and customer service skills are essential as this position serves as a vital representative of SwedishAmerican.

The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain the readiness of all critical care transport equipment and supplies. The Certified Respiratory Care Specialist will also contribute to the development of transport policies and procedures, implement protocols, and provide educational training to healthcare professionals both within SwedishAmerican and in surrounding healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Deliver comprehensive patient care during inter-facility transports in partnership with team members. Complete patient assignments and ensure stabilization of transport patients. Prioritize tasks and adapt to evolving patient conditions, taking necessary actions to mitigate risks. Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including the interpretation of blood gases and lab results, management of mechanical ventilation, and administration of nitric oxide and nebulizers. Represent SwedishAmerican to external healthcare facilities with outstanding communication and service. Assist in the formulation or revision of transport policies, educational materials, and competencies. Lead or engage in Outreach Education initiatives as required. Demonstrate basic pediatric assessments during pediatric emergencies. Participate in or conduct research as necessary. Provide orientation, education, and support to new staff regarding departmental services. Integrate clinical practice standards and protocols to enhance care effectiveness. Utilize technology efficiently to improve care delivery and operational efficiency. Implement relevant practice protocols tailored to the patient demographic. Apply research findings to clinical practice. Foster multidisciplinary collaboration to positively influence health outcomes. Encourage patient involvement and self-determination in health-related decisions. Maintain current knowledge and expertise in clinical specialty while promoting professional development among peers and students.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited program. A minimum of two years of experience as a staff therapist, particularly with neonatal and pediatric critical care patients.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

Minimum Requirements:

Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the state of Illinois. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Basic Life Support/CPR certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or the ability to obtain within two years of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Obtain Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) certification within two years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Perinatal Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner certification.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Capability to deliver complete critical care independently. Expertise in patient assessment and monitoring. Proficiency in interpreting blood gases and lab values. Skills in mechanical ventilation and nitric oxide administration. Strong critical thinking abilities. Quick and accurate assessment skills to provide appropriate care.
