POSITION SUMMARY:
The Certified Respiratory Therapist (Pediatric and Neonatal) is a highly skilled professional dedicated to the specialized care of infants and children during critical care transport. This role requires close collaboration with the critical care transport nurse and medical control physician to ensure optimal patient care. Exceptional communication and customer service skills are essential as this clinician represents SwedishAmerican in various healthcare settings.
The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain the readiness of all critical care transport equipment and supplies. The Certified Respiratory Therapist will also contribute to the development of transport policies and procedures, as well as provide education and training to healthcare professionals within SwedishAmerican and affiliated community hospitals.
Major Responsibilities:
Deliver comprehensive patient care during inter-facility transports alongside fellow team members. Complete patient assessments and stabilize individuals during transport. Prioritize tasks, adapting to evolving patient conditions and taking action to mitigate urgent risks. Execute diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, including the interpretation of blood gases and lab results, management of mechanical ventilation, and administration of nitric oxide and nebulizers. Represent SwedishAmerican with outstanding communication and customer service to external healthcare facilities. Assist in the creation or revision of transport policies, educational materials, and competencies. Participate in Outreach Education initiatives as required. Conduct presentations and demonstrations related to pediatric assessments and emergency protocols. Engage in or facilitate research activities as necessary. Provide orientation, education, and support to new staff regarding departmental services. Incorporate clinical practice standards and protocols to enhance care effectiveness. Utilize technology efficiently to improve care delivery and operational efficiencies. Implement relevant practice protocols tailored to the patient population. Apply research findings to clinical practice. Foster multidisciplinary collaboration to positively influence health outcomes. Encourage patient involvement and self-determination in health-related decision-making. Maintain current knowledge and expertise in clinical specialty, taking responsibility for personal and professional development, as well as that of colleagues and students.EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Minimum:
Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) Accredited Program for Respiratory Therapy. Two years of experience as a staff therapist, including work with neonatal and/or pediatric critical care patients.Preferred:
N/ALICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Minimum:
Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the state of Illinois. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Basic Life Support/CPR Certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or ability to obtain within two years of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Obtain Neonatal Pediatric Specialty (NPS) Certification within two years of employment.Preferred:
Perinatal Pediatric Respiratory Care Practitioner.REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to deliver complete critical care independently. Expertise in patient assessment and monitoring. Proficiency in interpreting blood gases and lab values. Skill in mechanical ventilation and administration of nitric oxide. Strong critical thinking abilities. Capacity to assess situations quickly and provide appropriate care. Effective and professional communication with team members, medical staff, and families. Ability to acquire and maintain advanced skills, including basic airway management.
