About the Role

VNS Health is seeking a highly skilled Substance Use Counselor to join our Behavioral Health team. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing compassionate care and support to individuals struggling with substance use disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach and engagement activities to locate and enroll clients in our programs and services.
  • Practice in the community, including traveling to patients' homes or schools, to engage with clients and provide support.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to discuss care needs and identify solutions to support clients.
  • Apply your lived experience to build relationships and trust with clients, and educate them about program services, benefits, and self-help techniques.
  • Advocate for effective recovery-based services on behalf of clients, and assist in clarifying rehabilitation and recovery goals.
  • Teach symptom management and coping skills for resilience, and empower clients to take a proactive role in their recovery journey.
  • Review service plans with clients and their families or caregivers, and provide ongoing education, guidance, support, and encouragement.
  • Develop an inventory of resources to meet clients' needs, and provide navigation services to help them connect with community-based services and supports.
  • Document contacts with clients in our electronic medical record (EMR) system, in accordance with program policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
  • High school degree or equivalent required.
  • Youth Peer Advocate (YPA) and/or Family Peer Advocate (FPA) Certification(s) may be required.
  • Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) & Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CERPA) preferred.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a mental health, health care, or human services setting, preferred.
  • Experience working with a severely mentally ill, psychological trauma, and/or substance using population, preferred.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team.
  • Computer fluency.
  • Valid New York State driver's license, as determined by operational/regional needs.
  • Bilingual skills may be required as determined by operational needs.
