Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Records Coder to join our team at Northwell Health. As a Medical Records Coder, you will be responsible for accurately coding and abstracting patient records to ensure the production of high-quality healthcare data and accurate facility payment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and interpret medical records to ensure accurate and complete coding.
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to interpret clinical documentation and identify applicable codes.
  • Utilize resources and reference materials to identify appropriate codes and reference code applicability, rules, and guidelines.
  • Select principal diagnosis, secondary diagnoses, and procedures in accordance with ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
  • Assign discharge disposition and report data elements required for SPARCS data collection.
  • Apply coding conventions and official coding guidelines approved by CPT rules established by the AMA.
  • Generate compliant physician queries to clarify incomplete or ambiguous documentation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of coding decisions on revenue cycle.
  • Assist in educating physicians and clinicians on proper documentation practices.
  • Maintain certified coding credentials and adhere to minimum data standards for accuracy and efficiency.
Requirements
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCSP), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), required.
  • Successful completion of a medical coding course and minimum of two (2) year experience as an ICD-10 Outpatient/Inpatient medical records coder in an acute care facility, required.
  • Competent in the utilization of an electronic medical record and computerized coding/abstracting systems, required.
  • Experience with Computer Assisted Coding preferred.
Preferred Skills

Prior Hospital Inpatient Coding experience preferred.
