Petco is a category-defining health and wellness company focused on improving the lives of pets, pet parents, and Petco partners. We are seeking a skilled Senior Accountant to join our team.

  • As a Senior Accountant, you will be responsible for efficiently creating complex documents and/or reports using spreadsheet, database, and accounting software in a timely fashion.
  • You will independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes, analyzing moderately to highly complex data to determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Perform accounting duties and control activities to ensure financial results are reported without error, researching and analyzing selective data sets and/or accounts pertaining to the duties of the specific functional area of accounting being performed.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, reconciliations, forms, reports, and schedules relating to the accounts in the specific area of focus.
  • Effectively communicate with field partners, corporate support staff, and senior management, ensuring issues related to accounting are communicated to the appropriate impacted partners for action.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Indirect supervision of between 0 - 6 regular and/or temporary employees. Duties will include participation in training, assignment delegation, and review. May indirectly manage/lead cross-functional work groups.

Work Environment: The majority of job duties are conducted indoors in a quiet standard office environment, with little or no exposure to hazards. Work involves the frequent use of general office equipment such as calculator, keyboard, copier, telephone, and fax.

Education (Required): 4-year degree in Accounting

Work Experience (Required): Qualified applicant must have and/or be able to demonstrate previous experience with and/or the ability to:

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years accounting experience including progressively increasing areas of responsibility in 2 or more accounting functional areas.
  • Verbally communicate effectively and in writing with department associates, corporate support staff, and senior management regarding accounting information.
  • Make recommendations on the most profitable and legally compliant approach to accounting issues. A strong working knowledge of accounting operations related to a specific or multiple functional areas of accounting.
  • Act as an accounting liaison/business partner to a non-accounting business group.
  • Performance of detailed analytics over both balance sheet and Profit & Loss statements at the account level detail.
  • Manage multiple projects at one time.

Certification (Preferred): CPA certification preferred

Work Experience (Preferred): The following experience is preferred, however not required: Previous working experience with PeopleSoft financial software. Retail experience is strongly preferred. Previous employment for or work with a Big 4 company.

Skills: Advanced knowledge of all Microsoft Office Suite applications (e.g. Excel, Word, and Access) and 10-key by touch. Must be accurate, detail-oriented, proficient with personal computer-based programs, and trainable on company-specific systems
