We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Library Assistant to join our team at the Hawaii State Department of Education. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to our library operations, including circulation activities, processing orders for library materials, and maintaining the card catalog and other related files.
Key Responsibilities- Provide support to library operations, including circulation activities, processing orders for library materials, and maintaining the card catalog and other related files.
- Assist librarians in ordering materials, receiving and physically preparing materials for library use, and maintaining the shelflist file.
- Perform limited cataloging, including obtaining cataloging information from standard sources and preparing catalog cards.
- Assign classification numbers using the classification schedule for gift and other materials where subjects are easily discernable and fineness in classification is not critical.
- Supervise students and/or others in carrying out routine library tasks, including circulation, stack maintenance, physical preparation/upkeep of materials, inventorying materials, etc.
- Keep track of library's expenditures, prepare purchase orders and requisitions, and type memos, correspondence and reports.
- Assist students in locating materials in the library or using the card catalog, and clip newspaper and magazine articles relating to certain topics and place them under the appropriate category in a subject file.
- Supervise and participate in circulation desk activities, including overseeing the circulation desk operations in a library, handling problems and complaints, and explaining library policies and rules to patrons.
- Perform basic copy cataloging by locating a catalog record for the material to be cataloged and editing the record to match the piece in hand, in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
- Progressively responsible experience in a library, including performing various library support activities and applying library terminology, practices, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform various clerical procedures, operate various kinds of office equipment, and deal with others in a tactful and polite manner.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions, and compare words and numbers quickly and accurately.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or higher in library science or a related field preferred.
- One to two years of experience in a library setting, with progressively responsible experience in a library, including performing various library support activities and applying library terminology, practices, policies, and procedures.
The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced library environment, with frequent interactions with students, faculty, and staff. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
