Phlebotomy Specialist

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing day-to-day phlebotomy duties in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This role requires a systematic approach to work, ensuring courteous and informative interactions with patients, even during busy periods.
Key Responsibilities- Obtain proper specimens, verify patient identity, and label specimens correctly, understanding the importance of quality specimen integrity and its impact on test results and patient care.
- Use good judgment when procuring specimens from difficult patients or unusual circumstances, and document any deviations from standard procedure.
- Prioritize the collection and delivery of stat, urgent, timed orders, and routine orders to the laboratory, as well as nursing home specimens.
- Properly maintain and obtain phlebotomy items for blood collection, understanding the need for neatness.
- Monitor and use the computer system to track collection batches, outstanding specimen reports, enter/edit requisitions, and remove labels from printers in the lab office.
- Understand the importance of professionalism and exemplify a positive attitude as the laboratory's public relations provider, respecting patient confidentiality rights.
- Communicate and interact with customers, patients, physicians, and other professionals in a timely and professional manner, adhering to BVHA scripting and Service Excellence attributes.
- Understand the need to demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care relative to the age-specific needs of patients and comply with all organizational and safety policies, practices, and procedures.
- Be punctual and present when scheduled, adhering to attendance policy and documenting absences, occurrences, and tardiness.
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Valid driver's license (if not an Ohio driver's license, obtain one within 30 days of residency)
- Ability to provide own transportation while on duty
- Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills
- Organized, able to prioritize, work in a fast-paced environment, and have excellent problem-solving skills
- Customer-focused, service-oriented, and able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Knowledge of clinical or anatomical laboratory functions, medical terminology, or science background
- Associates degree in an Allied Health field
- Experience preferred
- PBT (ASCP) registration
- Completion of a regionally accredited phlebotomy certificate program
This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting, and standing. The associate will be required to walk, bend, and stand up to seven hours a day, lift twenty to fifty pounds, and reach work above the shoulders.
