Overview: The role involves assisting the educator in various classroom functions; overseeing student work groups, and performing additional tasks as assigned by the educator or administration. The position may require substituting for the educator and could involve organizing and supervising student clinical training at external locations. Non-instructional responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to: aiding in material development, clerical tasks, grading assignments, maintaining equipment, managing disciplinary actions, and other related duties.

Key Responsibilities: Work is conducted under the general oversight of administration. The individual in this role may be expected to undertake any or all of the following tasks (this list is not exhaustive):

1. Instruction
  1. In collaboration with the educator, prepares for daily instructional delivery by gathering and/or duplicating materials and arranging necessary equipment.
  2. Assists students who may struggle with understanding or keeping pace with the educator's presentations.
  3. Works with individuals or small groups on follow-up activities as directed by the educator.
  4. Reiterates initial instruction for students who were absent during the original lesson.
  5. Supports the educator in organizing daily instructional activities and preparing materials for specialized units.
2. Management and Oversight
  1. Supervises student groups or individuals in both classroom and clinical environments.
  2. Temporarily substitutes for the educator as needed.
  3. May coordinate and oversee students during clinical experiences.
  4. Administers examinations.
  5. Monitors students engaged in desk-bound study and learning tasks assigned by the educator.
  6. Upholds and enforces standards of behavior within the Career Center and program, referring violations to the educator or appropriate administrators.
  7. Collaborates with the educator on program objectives, needs, and instructional strategies for students.
  8. Utilizes counseling resources, with the educator's approval, to assist students in achieving desired behavioral changes.
3. Record Keeping
  1. Maintains records of grades in designated record-keeping systems.
  2. Tracks daily student attendance.
  3. Consults with the educator on observed student skills and activities for competency profiling.
  4. Evaluates daily work and tests using provided scoring keys and standards.
  5. Discusses supply and equipment needs with the educator.
  6. Monitors students and documents daily receipts and customer invoices.
  7. Prepares instructional handouts and teaching materials, ensuring adequate inventory.
4. Safety
  1. Reports accidents, unsafe conditions, or hazards to the educator or administrator.
  2. Adheres to established safety protocols to maintain a secure classroom environment.
5. Maintenance and Repair
  1. Conducts routine housekeeping and minor repairs of equipment.
  2. Assists the educator with significant machinery and equipment overhauls.
6. Inventory Management
  1. Collaborates with the educator to complete inventory assessments.
7. Assumes the educator's role when necessary, as directed.

8. Participates in open houses, conferences, and other school-sponsored events as required.

9. Regular and predictable in-person attendance is essential for this position.

10. Performs various other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess either: (1) a high school diploma or equivalent along with 4,000 hours of relevant paid experience in healthcare within the last decade, or (2) at least 60 semester hours of satisfactory academic credit from accredited institutions (or meet other state-established substitute teaching requirements). Preference may be given to candidates with a Michigan nursing license (RN or LPN) or those holding an Associate's degree with a Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant license. Additional preference may be given to individuals with experience in long-term care settings with geriatric populations and/or Train the Trainer certification. Evidence of both educational background and relevant work experience must be included with the application.

Licenses and Certifications: A valid State of Michigan License (RN, LPN, MA, CNA, or other health professional license) is mandatory. Upon employment, and each subsequent school year, the employee will be required to obtain an applicable annual authorization or substitute teaching permit to fill in for the educator as necessary. A valid Michigan driver's license and a clean driving record are required. Candidates must possess or be willing to obtain a Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Group B, with a (P) Passenger endorsement and pass the CDL physical examination to operate a school bus if needed. A good driving record (no more than 6 points) is essential.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary placement on the Instructional Assistant salary schedule is contingent upon qualifications and experience. The starting hourly pay range is competitive, and the position includes paid family health, dental, and vision benefits; long-term disability insurance; life insurance; and paid sick and personal business days.
