POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of healthcare providers and nursing leadership, the Medical Assistant engages in a variety of administrative and clinical responsibilities aimed at delivering high-quality and compassionate patient care. Key responsibilities include greeting and escorting patients to examination rooms, collecting medical histories, measuring and documenting vital signs, preparing patients for examinations or procedures, and assisting providers during these processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care:
- Conduct initial-response screenings following established protocols.
- Prepare patients for examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Measure vital signs and accurately record them in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Gather and document patient histories utilizing critical thinking skills.
- Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments according to established protocols.
- Administer and document medications and immunizations as prescribed, ensuring accurate records are maintained.
- Document care provided during patient visits in the EHR.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies effectively.
- Timely address patient requests through various communication channels, documenting responses in the EHR.
- Enter medication, radiology, and lab orders for provider approval.
- Provide discharge instructions to patients and caregivers as directed.
- Process medication refill requests as per established protocols.
Diagnostic Responsibilities:
- Collect and process laboratory specimens.
- Perform CLIA-waived tests.
- Conduct electrocardiograms and other necessary tests based on departmental needs.
- Carry out phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
Consultation Duties:
- Act as a liaison between patients and medical staff for any issues or complaints.
- Coordinate and monitor patient appointments and outpatient procedures.
- Navigate third-party and managed care policies.
- Obtain necessary insurance pre-authorizations.
- Enter referrals for provider approval.
Quality Assurance:
- Participate in departmental quality assessment and improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to Standard Precautions, including proper hand hygiene and disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Implement aseptic and sterile techniques as required.
- Maintain instruments and equipment according to established policies.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards related to practice and documentation.
Instructional Responsibilities:
- Serve as a healthcare advocate to meet individual patient needs.
- Educate patients on office policies and procedures.
- Provide health maintenance and disease prevention education as directed by supervising physicians.
- Identify community resources to support patient health maintenance.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Support the mission, vision, and values of Henry Ford Health System.
- Maintain treatment rooms, including inventory management of supplies and equipment.
- Uphold core competencies as defined by the organization.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program with a formal clinical externship.
- Alternatively, a Medical Assistant program graduate with at least one year of clinical experience within the last five years.
- Current Medical Assistant Certification or equivalent qualifications.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Current BLS certification upon hire or completion by the end of orientation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in keyboarding.
- Ability to perform a range of clinical skills relevant to ambulatory care.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills.
- Experience with EPIC or similar electronic medical records systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This role involves working in a patient care environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases. Manual dexterity is required, along with the ability to stand, walk, stoop, and occasionally lift patients or equipment.
