POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct oversight of healthcare providers and nursing management, the Medical Assistant executes a range of administrative and clinical responsibilities to enhance the quality and compassionate care delivered to patients. Responsibilities may encompass, but are not limited to, welcoming and guiding patients to examination rooms, gathering medical histories, measuring and documenting vital signs, preparing patients for examinations or procedures, and assisting providers during these processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care:

  • Conduct initial-response screenings in accordance with protocols established by the supervising provider.
  • Guide patients to examination rooms and prepare them for assessments, procedures, and treatments.
  • Measure vital signs and accurately record them in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Collect and document patient histories using critical thinking skills.
  • Prepare for, set up, and assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments following established protocols and policies.
  • Administer and document medications and immunizations as directed by the supervising provider, ensuring compliance with the six rights of medication administration in the EHR.
  • Document care provided during patient visits in the EHR.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies effectively.
  • Monitor and respond promptly to patient inquiries via telephone, messages, or patient portals, documenting responses in the EHR.
  • Input medication, radiology, and laboratory orders in the electronic health record for provider approval.
  • Provide discharge instructions to patients and/or caregivers as directed by the provider.
  • Process medication refill requests according to established protocols.

Diagnostic Duties:

  • Collect and process laboratory specimens.
  • Perform CLIA-waived tests.
  • Conduct electrocardiograms, respiratory tests, and other assessments as required by departmental needs.
  • Carry out phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary puncture.

Consultation:

  • Act as a liaison between patients and medical staff in case of issues or complaints.
  • Coordinate and manage patient appointments.
  • Schedule outpatient procedures.
  • Implement third-party and managed care policies and guidelines.
  • Obtain insurance pre-authorizations.
  • Enter referrals for provider approval.

Quality Assurance:

  • Engage in departmental quality assessment and improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to Standard Precautions, including hand hygiene and proper disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Apply aseptic and sterile techniques as necessary.
  • Clean instruments and equipment in accordance with established policies.
  • Comply with all safety standards set by the organization and department.
  • Maintain adherence to regulatory standards concerning practice, environment, and documentation.

Education and Advocacy:

  • Serve as a healthcare advocate to address individual patient needs.
  • Educate patients about office policies and procedures.
  • Provide health maintenance and disease prevention education within the scope of practice as directed by the supervising physician.
  • Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention tailored to individual patient needs.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain examination and treatment rooms, including inventory management of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with core competencies as defined by the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with completion of a formal clinical externship.
  • Alternatively, graduates without externship but with a minimum of one year of clinical medical assisting experience within the last five years are also considered.
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification with at least five years of clinical experience is acceptable.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with relevant clinical experience is also acceptable.
  • Military-trained medical personnel with clinical experience are welcome to apply.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Current BLS-C certification upon hire or successful completion by the end of orientation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic computer proficiency and keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to perform a variety of clinical skills related to ambulatory patient care.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with EPIC (Electronic Medical Record) is preferred.
  • Professionally recognized Medical Assistant Certification from accredited organizations is advantageous.

Must practice customer service skills as provided through ongoing training and in-services. Successful completion of ambulatory orientation and pharmacology/general knowledge testing is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is conducted in a patient care environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases. Manual dexterity is necessary to perform duties. The role involves walking, standing, stooping, and may require lifting of patients and/or equipment.
