Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transportation Planner Senior to join our team at Jefferson County. As a key member of our Transportation and Engineering Division, you will be responsible for performing project management, technical, administrative, and professional work related to transportation planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage complex transportation projects, including grant management, plan development, regulation revisions, and updates to countywide and systemwide plans.
  • Lead public engagement efforts on planning projects, representing the county at external meetings with partners, community groups, and involved citizens.
  • Set priorities, define necessary resources, and identify quality sources of research and design work processes.
  • Manage the design process for implementation of bicycle facilities during seasonal overlay, ensuring best practices are achieved.
  • Assist in capital project roadway design for bicycle and pedestrian facilities, ensuring accessibility and safety are implemented.
  • Evaluate rezone and development proposals, understanding the characteristics of the development proposal and determining what transportation regulations and policies are appropriate to apply.
  • Create and implement program and policy recommendations of transportation-related plans.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries from the public, other agencies, and county personnel, providing technical information and assistance based on considerable knowledge and interpretation of county and state plans and regulations.
  • Establish relationships and serve as a liaison to residents, advocacy groups, businesses, and/or government agencies, conferring with various parties in public and private meetings on various transportation and regulation matters.
  • Utilize GIS mapping, word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database programs to enter, store, and/or retrieve information.
  • Serve as a county representative to various divisional and local committees, panels, and commissions, attending meetings and providing input based on expertise and observation.
  • Assist, mentor, and train newly hired planners, working as a lead worker performing essentially the same work as those directed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Land Use, Planning, Urban & Regional Planning, Geography, or a related field.
  • Plus, a minimum of five years of experience in transportation planning, roadway design, and transportation plan implementation.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification at hire or within one year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Seven years of related experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and/or supervision skills.
  • Independent critical thinking and analysis.
  • Demonstrating initiative, innovation, and resiliency.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Experience with high-level support of regulation and long-range projects.
  • Ability to work on multiple complex projects at one time.
  • Roadway design for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
  • Transportation-related development review experience.
  • Experience giving high-quality presentations to boards and commissions.
