Job Title: Chief Deputy City Solicitor

Job Summary:

The City of Philadelphia Law Department seeks a highly experienced and skilled attorney to lead the Right-to-Know Unit. As a Chief Deputy City Solicitor, you will be responsible for managing the unit and supervising direct reports, advising City officials on the Right-to-Know Law, and establishing a standard of excellence in the provision of legal services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the Right-to-Know Unit and supervise direct reports
  • Advise City officials on the Right-to-Know Law and ensure compliance
  • Establish a standard of excellence in the provision of legal services
  • Communicate with City stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Review records and provide legal advice on the public release of records
  • Research and analyze legal issues
  • Represent the City on appeals of Right-to-Know Law requests and related litigation
  • Advising the City on document-retention matters
  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues
  • Interpreting City, State, and Federal laws, rulings, and regulations
  • Reviewing, evaluating, and periodically updating form and training documents
  • Training City employees and officials on compliance with the Right-to-Know Law
  • Negotiating, reviewing, and drafting settlement and confidentiality agreements
  • Communicating with Unit staff and maintaining an open door for staff concerns
  • Providing opportunities for attorney training and mentoring
  • Fostering and maintaining a collegial, inclusive, and professional environment
  • Participating in external efforts to raise the profile of the Unit and the Law Department
Requirements:
  • Minimum of 9 years of legal experience relevant to the subject matter and/or responsibilities of the Unit
  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Member in good standing of the Pennsylvania Bar, or currently eligible to be admitted by reciprocity to practice in Pennsylvania
