The School Nurse is responsible for overseeing and managing the nursing process and providing care to students in a school environment. This role may include supervisory responsibilities within contracted services. The School Nurse delivers services aligned with Amergis Healthcare's philosophy, standards, policies, and physician directives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the healthcare needs of students.
  • Demonstrates skilled nursing care in accordance with prescribed orders and Individualized Health Plans (IHP).
  • Administers treatments, interventions, and medications based on established priorities as outlined in the IHP.
  • Monitors and documents the effectiveness of all interventions, treatments, and medications.
  • Completes necessary documentation in line with client expectations.
  • Coordinates and facilitates services between the school, local health agencies, and community resources to address student needs.
  • Communicates effectively with school district personnel regarding the student's care plan and IHP.
  • Notifies relevant parties, including the District School Nurse, Amergis Supervisor, parents, and physicians, about changes in student conditions as specified in the IHP.
  • Collaborates with educational and health personnel to design and meet the healthcare needs of students.
  • Ensures student safety at all times.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures set forth by Amergis Healthcare and the school district.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date student health records.

Professional Standards:

  • Complies with the Nurse Practice Act and Standards of Nursing Practice.
  • Follows the Standards of Patient Care and regulations from accrediting bodies.
  • Adheres to state laws, educational codes, and federal laws, including the ADA and IDEA.
  • Participates in student care conferences and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) as requested by the school district.
  • Directs questions regarding orders and changes in condition to a Supervising RN.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (RN, LPN, or LVN).
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse in the state of practice.
  • Preferred: One year of professional nursing experience.
  • Commitment to maintaining accepted professional standards and practices.
  • Willingness to engage in skill advancement opportunities.
  • Completion of Amergis' Competency program.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • PPD or chest x-ray documentation, if applicable.
  • Current health certificate as required by contract or state regulations.
  • Compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as relevant to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
