Position Overview

Michigan State University operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a premier user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, contributing to the mission of the Office of Nuclear Physics. As one of the leading user facilities, FRIB offers researchers cutting-edge tools to investigate rare isotopes and short-lived nuclei. This facility is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, facilitating groundbreaking discoveries in nuclear properties, astrophysics, and societal applications such as medicine and security.

This role presents an exceptional opportunity to join the esteemed FRIB Laboratory, fostering unique research prospects in nuclear science.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the structural design and analysis of a 28 GHz ECR magnet, employing Nb3Sn technology for next-generation ECR magnets, with a focus on optimizing structural integrity due to wire sensitivity.
  • Develop conceptual designs for superconducting quad and dipole magnets utilizing NbTi, Nb3Sn, and HTS technology, specifically tailored for beam line applications.
  • Contribute to the structural design of the FRIB 644 MHz upgrade cryomodule.
  • Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to ensure compliance of the cryogenic vessel with ASME pressure vessel and piping standards.
  • Perform thermal analyses for superconducting devices.
  • Establish procedures for the assembly and testing of superconducting magnets, including the preparation of design reports and technical specifications.
  • Create technical specifications for superconducting magnet systems and components for procurement, overseeing the procurement process and reviewing vendor results.
  • Present updates on departmental activities and advancements to various stakeholders, including professional organizations and conferences.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Recognized expertise in the field of superconducting magnets and accelerator systems.
Desired Skills
  • Ph.D. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, with proven experience in designing and operating large-scale low-temperature superconducting magnets and related systems.
  • Prior experience in accelerator systems and familiarity with FEA of electromagnetic analysis.
  • Experience with control and data acquisition systems.
