Primary Purpose:
To deliver a comprehensive health services program for the school environment. This role includes providing health services to students and promoting health education and preventive health practices.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing education program
- Valid RN license to practice in Texas
- Certification to conduct vision and hearing screenings
- CPR Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Understanding of health assessments to identify student health issues
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities
- Capability to implement policies and procedures
Experience:
- Minimum of two years nursing experience, preferably in community health
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Nursing Services:
- Deliver direct care utilizing professional assessment skills and established health protocols.
- Act as a health advocate for students.
- Inform parents of student accidents or illnesses and secure medical care in emergencies.
- Manage the administration of medications to students in accordance with district policies.
- Establish effective procedures for mandatory health screenings and make necessary referrals.
- Evaluate and enhance the campus health program based on findings.
- Contribute to the development of health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
- Educate faculty and staff on health-related topics as needed.
- Offer health counseling and instruction to individual students.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, healthcare providers, parents, and the community.
- Assess student health issues and coordinate referrals with relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in committees and develop Individual Health Plans.
- Collaborate on health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items.
- Engage in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
- Conduct home visits to assist with student health issues as necessary.
- Maintain communication with various staff regarding health service matters.
- Review and maintain immunization records.
- Supervise and train nursing aides in clinic procedures.
- Compile and maintain health records and reports as required.
- Order supplies and equipment for the clinic.
- Adhere to policies established by relevant health authorities and district regulations.
- Report health and safety hazards to the principal.
- Follow all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain certifications in CPR and health screening.
- Exhibit professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversee the work of licensed vocational nurses and health clinic aides.
Equipment Used:
Standard medical equipment including thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, and computers.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to communicable diseases and the ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Frequent standing, bending, and other physical activities are required.
