Primary Purpose:
To deliver a comprehensive health service program within the school setting. The role involves providing health services to students while promoting health education and preventive health measures.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Graduate from an accredited nursing program
Valid RN license to practice in Texas
Certification to conduct vision and hearing screenings
CPR Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Understanding of health assessments to identify student health issues
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities
Capability to implement policies and procedures effectively.

Experience:
Minimum of two years of nursing experience, preferably in community health settings.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Nursing Services:
  • Deliver direct care utilizing professional assessment skills and established health protocols.
  • Act as a health advocate for students.
  • Inform parents of any accidents or illnesses and arrange for medical care in emergencies.
  • Manage the administration of medications to students in accordance with district policies.
  • Establish effective procedures for mandatory health screenings and make necessary referrals.
  • Develop and continuously evaluate the campus health program, making adjustments based on findings.
Instruction:
  • Contribute to the development of health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
  • Educate faculty and staff on health-related topics as needed.
  • Offer health counseling and instruction to individual students.
Consultation:
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, healthcare providers, parents, and the community.
  • Assess student health issues and coordinate referrals with teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in school committees and develop Individual Health Plans.
  • Collaborate with professionals regarding health-related IEP items.
  • Engage in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  • Conduct home visits to assist with student health issues as necessary.
  • Maintain regular communication with school staff regarding health service matters.
Administration:
  • Review and maintain immunization records.
  • Supervise and train nursing aides in clinic procedures.
  • Compile and maintain accurate health records for all students.
  • Order necessary supplies and equipment for the clinic.
  • Adhere to all relevant federal and state health regulations.
  • Report any health and safety concerns to the principal.
  • Follow district and campus policies and procedures.
Professional Development:
  • Maintain certifications in CPR and health screening.
  • Exhibit professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversee the work of licensed vocational nurses and health clinic aides.

Equipment Used:
Standard medical equipment including thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, and vision screening tools.

Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to communicable diseases and the need to lift up to 30 pounds. Frequent standing, bending, and other physical activities.
