About the Culinary Specialist Role

The U.S. Army is seeking highly motivated and skilled individuals to fill the position of Culinary Specialist. As a Culinary Specialist, you will be responsible for preparing and serving meals to soldiers in the field and in garrison.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Food Preparation: Bake, fry, braise, boil, simmer, steam, and sauté as prescribed by Army recipes.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate, maintain, and clean field kitchen equipment.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance on garrison and field kitchen equipment.
Requirements:
  • Basic Requirements: Must be between the ages of 17 and 35, have a GED or High School Diploma, and be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder.
  • ASVAB Scores: Must complete the ASVAB test to determine eligibility for the Culinary Specialist role.
Training and Development:
  • Job Training: Complete 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 9 weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instructions.
  • Skills Learned: Standard and dietetic menus and recipes, preparation and cooking of various foodstuffs and bakery products, food and supply ordering, and storage of meats, poultry, and other perishable items.
Helpful Skills:
  • Interest in Cooking: Interest in cooking, home economics, health, mathematics, accounting, and chemistry.
