Role Objective

The primary responsibility of the Part-Time Bus Driver is to ensure the safe and punctual transportation of students to various locations, following established routes and schedules. This role is crucial in maintaining a secure and organized environment on the bus, supervising student behavior, and adhering to safety protocols. By fostering a positive and respectful atmosphere among students and collaborating with school personnel, the bus driver plays a vital role in the efficient operation of the school transportation system while prioritizing student welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operates a school bus as a substitute driver, adhering to designated schedules for transporting students to and from various locations, including home, school sites, and field trips as necessary.
  • Supervises the loading and unloading of students, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and releasing students only to authorized individuals.
  • Maintains order and discipline among passengers, effectively managing disputes and documenting serious incidents.
  • Conducts thorough investigations in the event of accidents.
  • Ensures the bus is operated safely and kept clean, promptly reporting mechanical issues and performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning the interior and maintaining fuel and oil levels.
  • Collaborates with parents, supervisors, and staff to establish efficient student drop-off and pickup schedules, adjusting routes as needed.
  • Follows and adheres to the routing and scheduling of buses, reviewing bus stop locations to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Monitors students with specific health needs, following prescribed procedures to ensure their well-being during transportation.
  • Responds promptly to inquiries and concerns, maintaining open communication with supervisors regarding potential issues.
  • Keeps comprehensive records, including mileage, routing, maintenance, and schedules.
  • Represents the school in a professional manner, attending meetings, programs, and training as directed.
  • Supports the development of transportation policies and procedures, exemplifying high standards and promoting professional growth.
  • Provides assistance to other routes during breakdowns or unique situations as assigned.
  • Offers input on student discipline matters to the Transportation Coordinator or school leader and performs additional duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet all requirements established by the Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of Education.
  • Valid driver's license with necessary endorsements.

  • Outstanding driving record.
  • Solid record of punctuality verified by reference checks.
  • Experience in a school environment with school-age children.
