Recreational Activities Specialist I: $16.13 per hour, Recreational Activities Specialist II: $19.27 per hour
Sign-On and Continuous Service Bonuses
$5,000 sign-on bonus available, $6,000 continuous service bonus available (must meet eligibility criteria)
Job Summary
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities related to planning, organizing, directing, and conducting individual and group leisure-time and physical education activities in a hospital, institution, or school.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and conduct various leisure-time and physical education activities, prepare scheduled events, and ensure required equipment and materials are in place.
- Plan and direct group activities aimed at developing appropriate group interaction behavior, a sense of teamwork, and fairness, interpersonal communication skills, and cooperation, and ensure order and discipline are maintained during recreation periods.
- Supervise, coach, and instruct indoor and outdoor team and athletic events.
- Teach physical education, hygiene, sanitation, and good personal habits.
- Participate in the maintenance, procurement, and selection of athletic equipment, facilities, supplies, and other materials for leisure-time activities and physical education programs.
Level Descriptor
This is the career level where incumbents will be assigned responsibilities at the full performance level for performing duties at all levels of complexity and may provide training and guidance to others in completing various recreational activities.
Education and Experience Requirements
Education and experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in instructing/directing a community service or recreational program, or in closely related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required at this level include knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques, and equipment used in recreational therapy, outdoor adventure/wilderness recreational activities, the goals of recreational therapy, and its interrelationship with other treatment programs, and the causes of abnormal behavior and behavior modification techniques.
Ability is required to supervise and plan various types of recreational activities, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, exercise initiative and independent judgment, and work with mentally ill or physically handicapped clients.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position, possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of appointment, and be willing to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Office of Juvenile Affairs has determined that some positions in this job family are safety-sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8.
Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.
A trial period of 12 months will be required.
