Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician II to join our team. As a Pharmacy Technician II, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient dispensing of medications to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Medication Preparation and Dispensing: Prepare and fill routine orders for prescribed medications, restock automated dispensing machines, and repack medications.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Abide by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles, including look alike, sound alike, and high alert drugs. Respond to medication occurrences and comply with internal reporting requirements.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Assist pharmacists in obtaining patient-specific information for safe medication management, participate in the exchange of information with healthcare professionals and staff, and contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives.
  • Inventory Management and Storage: Ensure that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital, store medications under conditions necessary to ensure stability, and secure medications in accordance with hospital policy, law, and regulation.
  • Automated Dispensing Machines: Refill and replace medications in automated medication dispensing machines throughout the hospital, troubleshoot and service machines as needed, and label all medications and chemicals used to prepare medications with contents, expiration dates, and appropriate warnings.
  • Recalled and Discontinued Medications: Adhere to all laws, regulations, and hospital policies regarding the management and handling of recalled, discontinued, unused, expired, or returned medications, inspect returned medications for integrity before returning to pharmacy stock, and segregate outdated or recalled medications from pharmacy stock.
  • Medication Management System Evaluation: Participate in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identify areas to improve safety.
  • Preparation and Packaging of Medications: Safely and accurately prepare all medications in the most ready-to-administer form, using proper techniques, calculations, and appropriate precautions, and label and package medications according to hospital policy, applicable laws and regulations, and standards of practice.
  • Selection and Procurement of Medications: Ensure that medications are selected and procured based on departmental criteria, demonstrate a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process, and adhere to policies and procedures regarding the procurement of non-formulary medications.
  • Controlled Substances: Store controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, account for all unused, expired, or returned medications according to law, and utilize automation where applicable.
  • Transportation of Medications: Transport medication to patient care units, placing in the designated delivery locations, within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma, equivalent graduation, or GED required. Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
  • Experience: 1 year 6 months related pharmacy technician experience and hospital environment experience preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Board of Pharmacy required and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification within 180 Days required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of drug nomenclature and medical terminology, proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimals, and basic computer skills preferred.
