Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician II to join our team. As a Pharmacy Technician II, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and accurate preparation and dispensing of medications to our patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, prepare and fill routine orders for prescribed medications, restock automated dispensing machines, repack medications, and compound both sterile and non-sterile medications.
  • Abide by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles, including look alike, sound alike, and high alert drugs. Respond to medication occurrences and take appropriate action when a medication occurrence is identified.
  • Assist pharmacists in obtaining patient-specific information as appropriate for safe medication management and participate in the exchange of information with healthcare professionals and staff.
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Ensure that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital, store medications under conditions necessary to ensure stability, and secure medications in accordance with hospital policy, law, and regulation.
  • Refill and replace medications in automated medication dispensing machines throughout the hospital, troubleshoot and service automated medication dispensing machines as needed, and label all medications and chemicals used to prepare medications with contents, expiration dates, and appropriate warnings.
  • Participate in the evaluation of the hospital's medication management system for risk points and identify areas to improve safety.
  • Safely and accurately prepare all medications in the most ready-to-administer form, using proper techniques, calculations, and appropriate precautions, and maintain documentation for all repackaged medications as required by departmental policy.
  • Selection and Procurement: Ensure that medications are selected and procured based on departmental criteria, demonstrate a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process, and adhere to policies and procedures regarding the procurement of non-formulary medications.
  • Store controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations, account for all unused, expired, or returned medications according to law, and utilize automation where applicable.
  • Transport medication to patient care units, placing in designated delivery locations, within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
  • Participate in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
  • 1 year 6 months related pharmacy technician experience and hospital environment experience preferred.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician through the Board of Pharmacy required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification within 180 Days required.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of drug nomenclature and medical terminology; proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimals.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
