Job Summary

As an Inpatient Coding Specialist II at Citizens Medical Center, you will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and efficient coding of diagnoses and procedures. Your advanced coding skills will enable you to review medical records, identify and code diagnostic and procedural information, and ensure optimal DRG assignment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review complete inpatient medical records to identify and code all diagnostic and procedural information using ICD-10-CM/PCS classification system.
  • Maintain productivity standards for assigned work type with a minimum of 95% accuracy.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes with accuracy, ensuring adequate physician documentation to support.
  • Collaborate with Providers, Clinicians, and Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists to provide analysis of documentation for clinical support of diagnoses/quality indicators.
  • Identify patient safety errors within the electronic medical record.
  • Review virtual and coding worklists daily to prioritize work.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, AMA Coding Clinic advice, and all applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reimbursement (Medicare and Medicaid) principles and methodologies and have a working knowledge of compliance guidelines related to coding and billing.
  • Work independently in coding as a remote employee, troubleshooting and assisting analysis of system issues independently with IT assistance.
  • Understand computer systems and possess the ability to reconcile various accounts, charges, including correct discharge dates, and requesting billing to link account as necessary.
  • Utilize Optum computer-assisted coding and encoder to assign correct ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for diagnoses and procedures abstracted from medical record documentation.
  • Approve code assignment by sending account to billing.
  • Complete query for documentation clarification from physician when needed.
  • Assist on-site at hospital when supervisor out of office for more than two consecutive days.
  • Assist Coding Supervisor with provision of training to new staff.
  • Assist Coding Supervisor with appeals process for DRG changes/denials.
Requirements
  • Associates degree in a health-related field or graduate from a Medical Coding course from a recognized college, major university, or technical program.
  • At least one (1) year inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility.
  • Advanced ICD-10-CM/PCS coding knowledge and scoring a minimum of 80% on pre-employment coding test.
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.
