Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor and the Manager of the Parrish Heart and Health Village, the role involves the collection of high-quality blood specimens using venipuncture and micro-collection techniques for both inpatients and outpatients. The position requires accurate patient identification and verification of preparation, alongside the use of laboratory computer systems for data entry and retrieval.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver comprehensive phlebotomy care in accordance with established standards, demonstrating proficiency in procedures suitable for various patient age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors.
  • Ensure correct patient identification and accurately interpret physician orders and diagnoses. Document standing orders and provide clear instructions to patients regarding their tests.
  • Utilize laboratory computer systems to manage requests and ensure all samples are collected as per established protocols.
  • Provide patient education prior to procedures, addressing any questions and offering both verbal and written aftercare instructions.
  • Process blood specimens accurately, ensuring proper identification for specimen integrity and safe transportation to the laboratory.
  • In the Emergency Department, perform age-specific procedures following training and competency validation.
  • Conduct daily quality checks in Express Testing environments, monitoring equipment performance.
  • Organize workflow to enhance testing efficiency, prioritizing tasks appropriately and addressing any issues in specimen collection.
  • Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with corporate standards.
  • Act as a mentor for new employees and students, collaborating with other departments to share knowledge on new procedures.
  • Understand and follow safety protocols relevant to the work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including inventory management of lab supplies.
Qualifications:

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
  • 1 to 2 years of experience as a phlebotomist is preferred; candidates with completed phlebotomy training programs may also be considered.
Certifications:
  • BLS certification from The American Heart Association is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification is strongly preferred.
