Overview:

Ensure the operational readiness of the vessel's engine room and associated equipment to fulfill client requirements efficiently. Engage in the initiation and cessation of operations, diagnostic assessments, and upkeep of the vessel's power and propulsion mechanisms. Responsibilities encompass handling heavy lines and hoses, maintenance on oil and cargo barges, general upkeep of the vessel, and other duties as assigned by the vessel's command team.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

ENGINE ROOM OPERATIONS:

  • Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs while underway on primary engines, gears, pumps, motors, plumbing, deck machinery (including towing winches), and auxiliary generator units.
  • Perform routine maintenance on the tug and barge as required.
  • Ensure proper fluid levels for tug operations.
  • Carry out lubrication services.
  • Monitor and document the operational status of engine room equipment.
  • Maintain a daily log with accurate readings and timestamps.
  • Keep the engine room clean and ready for immediate operation.
  • Wash down the engine room weekly and at the end of each crew shift.
  • Refuel the tug as necessary.

DECK OPERATIONS:

  • Assemble all tows as directed by the captain or mate.
  • Utilize radio communication effectively.
  • Perform knot tying, line/wire splicing, and manage heaving lines and messengers.
  • Properly secure barge tows.
  • Provide accurate direction and distance signals.
  • Engage in ongoing painting of the tug's interior and exterior.
  • Assist in loading supplies.
  • Conduct general cleaning of tugs and barges.
  • Participate in cooking and galley duties as required.
  • Complete material requisitions and work order documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience with marine diesel engines.
  • Possession of MMC and DDE Unlimited certifications.
  • Valid PIC certification.
  • Ability to comprehend and execute specific instructions from the captain or mate.
  • Capability to learn and apply safety protocols, injury prevention measures, and firefighting techniques.
  • Perform essential job functions with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and utilize information from cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Operate all firefighting and lifesaving equipment on board.
  • Familiarity with high (up to 480) and low voltage electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems.
  • Proficient in the use of power tools, including welding and cutting equipment.
  • Ability to work independently without direct oversight.
  • Complete firefighting training within six months of employment.
  • Possess a valid first aid certification.
  • CPR training certification required.
  • Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid state driver's license is necessary.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to various weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.).
  • Ability to live in confined spaces and collaborate with crew members for extended periods.
  • Physical capability to perform job functions, including pulling heavy lines/hoses, lifting, carrying heavy items, climbing onto barges, navigating ladders, and bending/twisting during vessel tie-ups.
  • Comfortable working at heights.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexibility to adapt to various schedules and hours.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and night shifts. Availability for call-outs is essential.
