Clinical Assistant Professor / Associate Professor of Surgery - Kidney/Pancreas Transplant (MTI)

The role of Clinical Assistant Professor/Associate Professor in Surgery necessitates an M.D. degree and requires the candidate to be Board Certified or Board Eligible, or possess a foreign equivalent. Completion of a Transplant Fellowship is essential. The individual must hold a valid Florida Medical License and a DEA certificate. This position reports directly to the Director of Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant within the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery.

The appointee will oversee clinical responsibilities in all facets of pediatric and adult Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas transplant surgery, including pre-transplant assessments and post-transplant management.

Involvement in resident supervision at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is expected. Additionally, this position may involve teaching responsibilities for students participating in both junior and senior elective programs as organized by this Division within the surgical curriculum. Attendance and oversight at the outpatient clinic may also be required.

The successful candidate will actively engage in research initiatives to secure funding for experiments under their guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

Administration:
  • Assist in compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, administrative guidelines, standards of care, and the accrediting standards of CMS, UNOS, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure adherence to HIPAA policies by all clinical, administrative, and research personnel within this unit.
  • Foster effective working relationships with medical staff, transplant service personnel, and program administration.
  • Collaborate with the Medical and Surgical Director of Transplant to develop the necessary inpatient infrastructure for the care of Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant patients.
  • Work alongside the Surgical Director of Transplant Services to establish the OR infrastructure required for efficient surgical patient care.
Program Development:
  • Maintain a robust outpatient clinical program for Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas Transplant.
  • Partner with the Medical and Surgical Director to set transplant program goals and objectives that align with the hospital's mission and the MTI.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary service lines to enhance patient care both pre and post-transplant, including co-chairing weekly Multidisciplinary Pre-Transplant Selection Committee meetings.
  • Engage in site reviews conducted by regulatory agencies and insurance providers.
  • Encourage research activities within their specialty for themselves and fellow physicians, thereby enhancing clinical and academic pursuits.
  • Exhibit positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, referring physicians, hospital staff, and patients/families to achieve optimal operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrate consistent, efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality transplant care at all times.
  • Participate in initiatives aimed at improving transplant patient/family satisfaction.
Quality Assurance:
  • Provide physician leadership to the Transplant program's Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement Committee.
  • Participate in monthly program-specific QAPI committee meetings.
  • Attend MTI QAPI Committee meetings.
  • Analyze outcomes and trends in data to determine appropriate performance metrics.
  • Assist in data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Identify and lead performance improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of treatment guidelines, policies, and protocols.
  • Promptly report quality of care issues to the appropriate individuals and committees.
  • Identify and address deficiencies in transplant care policies and guidelines.
  • Consult with medical staff and administration regarding quality care issues and adverse outcomes.
  • Ensure continuity of care is maintained.
Clinical Education:
  • Ensure that education is provided for hospital staff regarding transplant program policies and appropriate medical practices.
Business Development/Community Engagement:
  • Maintain relationships with referring physicians and community organizations related to transplant activities.
  • Support business development initiatives to enhance physician patient referrals.
  • Act as a resource for referring physicians, providing timely responses and feedback.
  • Oversee and participate in fundraising efforts to support transplant needs.
  • Engage in hospital, physician, and community outreach activities as requested by administration.
  • Participate in educational initiatives for the transplant community and referring physicians.
