Job Title: Medical Assistant - Residential Program

Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant will provide direct healthcare services to women and children residing in the Residential Treatment Program for Women and Children in South Los Angeles. The ideal candidate will uphold the JWCH mission to improve the health status and wellbeing of under-served segments of the population of Los Angeles County.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform routine care functions as prescribed by established policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities.
  2. Oversee Physical Examination and TB compliance for each patient.
  3. Log medication, maintain Medical Administration Record, and audit MAR daily.
  4. Organize and maintain medication cabinet and patient medication boxes; to include removing medications left by patients and packaging them for proper disposal.
  5. Meet regularly with patients to review medications, side effects, appointments and refills needed.
  6. Oversee and determine Medi-Cal eligibility and coordinate with Enrollment Specialist for out of county transfers.
  7. Assess if patient has a medical provider and make change to Wesley Health Centers as appropriate. Assist in completing enrollment paperwork.
  8. Schedule appointments in Nextgen for psychiatric, family, prenatal and postpartum health care and other medical services.
  9. Coordinate and deliver Sexual and Reproductive Health services per County SRH contract.
  10. Coordinate with internal and outside agencies for HIV Education, HIV and STD testing and SRH services.
  11. Counsel on risk of HIV, Hepatitis C and other communicable diseases.
  12. Oversee urinalysis testing, submission and results.
  13. Coordinate with Nurse to conduct intake assessment, including Health Questionnaire with new admits and their children.
  14. Oversee and conduct COVID-19 test with new patient admissions and ongoing testing as needed. Keep an inventory of rapid test.
  15. Coordinate with Chef on dietary restrictions with any patients and food needs of children.
  16. Coordinate with Program Administrative for appointment transportation needs.
  17. Coordinate care with Medication Assisted Program, as well as other agency departments (HIV testing, Family Planning, Dental and Pediatric).
  18. Maintain Incident Log when Paramedics are called to the facility, and follow through when patient is admitted to the Hospital and review discharge paperwork upon return.
  19. Conduct Health Education Seminars on topics such as Harm Reduction, Nutrition & Addiction, Family Planning.
  20. Conduct staff seminars on health and wellness related topics.
  21. Enforce all COVID-19 safety measures.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  1. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate.
  2. Current BLS and First Aid card/certificate from the American Heart Association.
  3. Able to work with challenging and resistant population.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  5. Experience in working with patients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  6. Cultural competent working with minority, low income and vulnerable women.
  7. Able to work Holidays and other nontraditional work days and hours.
  8. Knowledgeable of alcohol and substance addiction, systemic trauma, sexual and reproductive health, smoking cessation, medication assisted treatment and child development.
  9. Knowledgeable of mental illness diagnosis and psychotropic medications treating mood disorders, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders.
  10. Proficient in Microsoft Programs.
  11. Proficient in managing Medical Administration Record.
Preferred:
  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  2. Registered Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor: Must be certified by one of the agencies accredited by the NCCA and recognized by DHCS, which include CADTP and CCAPP; and who must adhere to all requirements of the California Code of Regulations, Title 9, Chapter 8 and Title 9.
