ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Controller, the Finance Operations Manager oversees the firm's financial reporting activities, which encompass the monthly closing procedures, supervision of both domestic and international office general ledger maintenance, fixed asset management, and accounting for affiliated entities. This position is also accountable for coordinating the annual audit of the firm's financial statements. The role involves monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of internal controls to ensure compliance with established best practices and regulations, particularly concerning financial reporting risks and cash safeguarding. Additionally, this role provides effective coaching and oversight to team members, ensuring client satisfaction across all responsibilities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Controller to manage the Firm's general ledger accounting functions, ensuring transactions are recorded according to the modified cash basis of accounting for federal income tax reporting.
  • Oversee the accounting and financial reporting for various related entities, including but not limited to the Morrison & Foerster Foundation and other legal entities operating in international offices.
  • Prepare the firm's consolidated financial statements and accompanying notes for the Controller's review, subject to an independent annual audit.
  • Review quarterly and annual bank covenant reports prepared by the Senior Accountant for financial institutions with which the firm has credit lines.
  • Maintain the Firm's Chart of Accounts.
  • Ensure a streamlined and timely monthly closing process, utilizing checklists, analytics, and other tools; coordinate with various departments to guarantee efficient and timely delivery of necessary information for monthly closures and audits.
  • Review monthly reconciliations and analyses of general ledger accounts.
  • Examine monthly journal entries prepared by staff for each accounting period to ensure completeness and accuracy in reporting.
  • Develop, update, implement, and document accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper combination of separate legal entities and elimination of intercompany accounts.
  • Assist with specific accounting functions and procedures in the firm's international offices.
  • Support audit coordination.
  • Oversee internal controls.
  • Manage team performance.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in supervisory or managerial roles.
  • Experience in leading teams of at least 4 individuals.
  • Hands-on experience in managing general accounting operations and conducting accounting analyses.
  • Experience in internal auditing or internal controls testing is highly desirable.
  • Strong accounting and analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to foster effective relationships with internal and external clients.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with a demonstrated ability to inspire and develop a client-focused environment.
  • Successful track record in leading diverse teams in high-performance settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, assess urgency, and deliver solutions within deadlines.
  • Capacity to independently evaluate client needs and devise responsive solutions.
