Job Title: Head Mechanical Engineer

Outpost is seeking a highly skilled Head Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of our Ferryall and Carryall spacecraft vehicles. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and building the mechanical and structural systems of our spacecraft.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop large spacecraft structural systems, including thermal protection systems and mechanical systems integration
  • Lead a team of mechanical engineers and ensure proper management processes, including mentoring and coaching
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and management to ensure successful project execution
  • Write structural margins using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Create manufacturing and assembly plans for large-scale spacecraft
  • Design and conduct structural development, acceptance, and qualification tests
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or related field
  • Proven track record of designing, analyzing, and building mechanical systems that have flown in space
  • 8+ years of experience designing, analyzing, and building mechanical spacecraft systems
  • At least 2 years leading one or more mechanical engineers
Additional Skills:
  • Full system mechanical/structural analysis
  • FEA analysis, particularly NASTRAN/Femap
  • Thermal protection systems
  • Textiles
  • Knowledge of electro-mechanical devices, gear trains, actuators, motors, valves, regulators, or other fluid and position control devices
  • Experience with Solidworks, Solidworks PDM, configuration management, and GD&T
  • Experience in system-level thermal analysis (Thermal Desktop or similar)
