Position Overview:

The Facility Maintenance and Security Specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe and sanitary environment at the Maryland SPCA. This role encompasses cleaning and light maintenance tasks across the campus, along with security responsibilities as required. The position reports directly to the Business and Facilities Manager and supports various departments within the organization. The working hours are from Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 8 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

Custodial Duties:

  • Sanitize and maintain cleanliness in restrooms.
  • Clean and organize breakroom appliances including sinks, countertops, microwaves, refrigerators, and dishwashers.
  • Restock necessary supplies in breakrooms and restrooms.
  • Empty trash receptacles and replace liners, ensuring cleanliness of bins.
  • Dust and clean office furniture and desks that are free of clutter.
  • Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors and stairways.
  • Clean windows and windowsills.
  • Remove litter from the premises, including surrounding grounds and parking areas.
  • Maintain janitorial closets in an orderly and hygienic manner.
  • Ensure janitorial equipment is kept clean and in safe working condition.
  • Perform additional maintenance tasks as assigned.

Security Duties:

  • Conduct regular inspections of the facility and grounds, reporting any deficiencies or repair needs.
  • Identify and report any irregular or unusual conditions that may pose security risks or safety hazards.
  • Monitor client flow throughout operational hours.
  • Oversee video surveillance systems as necessary.
  • Assist staff or clients with security-related matters.
  • Investigate disturbances and coordinate with appropriate authorities when necessary.
  • Document and track incident reports.
  • Manage and de-escalate potentially dangerous situations.
  • Provide escort services for staff to their vehicles upon request.
  • Secure buildings at the end of operational hours.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred experience of 1+ years in custodial work.
  • Security training is a plus.
  • De-escalation training is preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and pass a criminal background check.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to manage tense situations.
  • Patience and understanding in interactions with individuals.
  • Professionalism in diverse interactions.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Adherence to the guidelines set forth in the Maryland SPCA Employee Handbook.
  • Open-mindedness towards change and willingness to learn and implement new protocols.
  • Demonstrated integrity and commitment to the mission of the Maryland SPCA.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to maintain control necessary for safety and security.

Working Conditions:

Work is conducted in both outdoor and indoor environments, with moderate noise levels. Exposure to various environmental conditions may occur, including proximity to animals.
