Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Psychologist to join our team at the Department of Veterans Affairs. As a Staff Psychologist, you will be responsible for providing high-quality mental health services to our patients, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Services:
    • Provide specialized psychological services to patients, including intake evaluation, diagnostic assessments, psychotherapy, and patient education.
    • Assess crisis situations, develop crisis plans, and provide crisis interventions and follow-up services.
    • Perform clinically indicated evaluations for outpatient and inpatient populations.
    • Provide a range of therapeutic interventions, including individual therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducation classes.
    • Consult with medical center staff on patient care issues, including patient decision-making capacity regarding healthcare.
    • Develop person-centered, culturally sensitive treatment plans to address mental health needs of patients.
    • Conduct evaluations to aid in the differential diagnosis of complex cases.
    • Comply with national and local performance measures, including timely healthcare screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.
    • Provide supervision to psychology interns and other trainees as appropriate.
  • Case Management Responsibilities:
    • Complete all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system in a timely manner.
    • Respond to patient requests for release of records, return telephone calls, and link services as needed.
    • Consult with significant others/support systems with patient permission to aid in treatment facilitation.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Attend annual training programs sponsored by the VISN, VAMC, and other APA-recognized training programs to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
    • Participate on selection panels for Staff Psychologist position vacancies or other positions as assigned by Chief MHSL.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
Qualifications
  • Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA).
  • Have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and successfully complete a re-specialization program meeting both of the following conditions: the re-specialization program must be completed in an APA or a CPA accredited doctoral program, and the specialty in which the applicant is retrained must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
  • Have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally-accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature.
  • Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed and that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
  • Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-11: None beyond the basic requirements.
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-12: At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11).
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-13: At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
