Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Functions:

  • Deliver specialized psychological services independently, addressing complex patient needs through comprehensive evaluations, diagnostic assessments, therapeutic interventions, and educational support.
  • Evaluate crisis situations, develop tailored crisis management plans, and implement follow-up interventions, focusing on individual treatment strategies for patients at risk of self-harm or harm to others.
  • Conduct necessary evaluations for both outpatient and inpatient populations.
  • Provide a diverse array of therapeutic options, including individual and group therapy, as well as psychoeducational sessions, adhering to best practices and evidence-based treatment protocols.
  • Collaborate with medical staff on various patient care matters, particularly regarding decision-making capabilities related to healthcare.
  • Create culturally sensitive, person-centered treatment plans that effectively address the mental health requirements of patients.
  • Perform evaluations to assist in the differential diagnosis of intricate cases.
  • Ensure compliance with national and local performance metrics, including timely health screenings and clinical reminders for all patients.
  • Offer supervision and guidance to psychology interns and trainees as appropriate.

Case Management Duties:

  • Complete all clinical documentation and charting promptly as required by the healthcare system.
  • Address patient requests for record releases, return calls, facilitate service linkages, and make appropriate referrals in a timely manner.
  • With patient consent, engage in collateral consultations with significant others or support systems to enhance treatment facilitation.

Additional Duties:

  • Participate in annual training programs to enhance expertise in specialized areas.
  • Engage in selection panels for Staff Psychologist vacancies or other designated roles as assigned.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday Telework:
Telework authorized in accordance with agency guidelines; this position is not fully remote.

Relocation/Recruitment Incentives:

Requirements:
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens. All candidates selected for VA employment in designated testing positions are subject to drug screening prior to appointment. Compliance with Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory. A probationary period may be required, and candidates will undergo a background/security investigation. An online onboarding process must be completed, and passing a pre-employment physical examination is necessary. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel. Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is also mandatory for Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel.

Qualifications:
Candidates pending completion of educational or licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.

Education:
A doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program is required. The specialty area must align with the job assignment.

Internships:
Completion of an APA or CPA accredited professional psychology internship is necessary.

Licensure:
A full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. jurisdiction is required.

Grade Determinations:
Staff Psychologist, GS-11: No additional experience required.
Staff Psychologist, GS-12: At least one year of experience at the GS-11 level is required.
Staff Psychologist, GS-13: At least two years of experience, with one year at the GS-12 level is necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to apply a wide range of psychological treatments and assessment methods, design effective treatment strategies, and conduct research activities within established teams.
