Job Summary

The City of Kodiak, AK is seeking a highly skilled Firefighter/EMT to join our team. As a Firefighter/EMT, you will be responsible for responding to emergency medical, fire, rescue, and hazardous material alarms, as well as performing various duties to protect life, property, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency medical, fire, rescue, and hazardous material alarms to protect life, property, and the environment.
  • Perform various duties to protect life, property, and the environment, including responding to non-emergency calls for service.
  • Drive and operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
  • Perform tasks to suppress, control, and extinguish fires, limit damage, and reduce injury and death caused by fires, accidents, or other calamities.
  • Recognize and preserve evidence of arson, observe spectators at fire scenes, and guard premises where arson is suspected.
  • Drive and operate fire fighting and suppression apparatus and specialized equipment and vehicles under emergency and non-emergency conditions.
  • Locate, stabilize, rescue, and remove injured and trapped victims from open water, ice, confined spaces, high-angle spaces, damaged vehicles, and other hazardous situations.
  • Perform aggressive search and rescue operations in heated and smoke-filled environments, usually with minimal to no visibility, while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including SCBA.
  • Inspect vehicles, equipment, and apparatus for proper operating conditions, assist with annual equipment testing, perform routine and minor repairs and maintenance, and identify needs for major repairs.
  • Assist with the cleaning and reloading of all equipment, tools, and apparatus upon completion of fire or emergency response activities.
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain reports on incidents, apparatus maintenance, and inventory, and enter/log data and information into computer systems.
  • Perform fire hazard inspections and pre-incident surveys of commercial and industrial structures.
  • Participate in public relations, fire/safety education activities, and fire prevention activities, including station tours, fire safety/fire suppression education, school education programs, fire prevention fairs, group activities, fire drills, courtesy walk-through visits, and phone inquiries.
  • Maintain skill levels, new equipment and procedure familiarization, and certifications that are relevant and/or required for assigned responsibilities.
  • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire station facilities and equipment, including cleaning living quarters, kitchen, bathrooms, and other areas of the fire station.
  • Testify in court as necessary.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must live within 12 road miles of the fire station and maintain telephone service.
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be certified as a Firefighter I and/or Firefighter II, and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) I, II, or III, depending on the level of certification required for the position.
  • Must be able to pass the Fire Department fitness test, medical exam, and pulmonary function test.
