Job Summary

The City of Kodiak, AK is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Technician I, II, or III to join our Public Works Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on City streets and right-of-ways, wastewater collection and storm water conveyance systems, landscapes, facilities, and buildings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on City streets, including filling potholes and repairing road edges
  • Conduct traffic control and install street barricades and cones as needed
  • Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, including excavators, forklifts, dump trucks, and heavy equipment
  • Perform special projects and assignments, including responding to emergency spill and cleanup calls
  • Monitor and maintain materials, supplies, equipment, and inventory items in assigned areas
  • Remove ice and plow snow from City streets and spread sand and road de-icer as needed
  • Perform routine service and maintenance on equipment and vehicles
  • Transport equipment and materials to work sites and load and unload equipment and materials

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required
  • Two to three years of maintenance, construction, or trades experience required
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and Alaska commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B or ability to obtain within six months of hire date required
  • Knowledge and experience with traffic control flagging and forklift operation desired

Certifications

  • Maintenance Technician I: No certifications required
  • Maintenance Technician II: State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Level 1 Operator certification in at least one of the following: Water Distribution (WD) or Wastewater Collection (WWC)
  • Maintenance Technician III: State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Level 2 Operator certifications in: Water Distribution (WD) and Wastewater Collection (WWC)

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a field environment with varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to dust, grease, fumes, odors, gases, vibrations, mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Work space restrictions and hazardous traffic conditions
  • Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain
  • Work at heights
