Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Radiologic Technologist II to join our team at UMass Memorial Health. This is a 24 hour evening shift position, working every fourth weekend.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable and/or specialized x-ray equipment to apply prescribed ionizing radiation in order to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients' illnesses and injuries.
  • Prepare patient for exams as required and insure patient comfort and modesty at all times. Obtain and examine the requisition for imaging examination. Always check patient identification band for inpatients and two methods of identification for outpatients before any procedure is performed.
  • Participate in transfer of patients if needed, position and instruct patients regarding the procedure in order to obtain and effect the desired screening/diagnostic results as specified by the physician.
  • Follow all department established and appropriate policies and procedures as required. Make changes and adjustments to techniques as required by observance of physician, Supervisor and self-improvement and initiative.
  • Provide protection according to department policy to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  • Calculate and select proper technical factors as appropriate to the procedure. Select equipment appropriate to the patient and the examination to be performed. Position patient and equipment to provide images specified by department protocol or requisition form.
  • Evaluate the images to assure that they contain proper identification and are of diagnostic quality. Adjust techniques and factors when necessary due to improper studies or quality factors. Check equipment and accessories to insure they are in proper operating condition.
  • Operate imaging equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques. Properly utilize and maintain computed radiography and direct imaging equipment. Review electronic images to ensure that it is of acceptable quality and completeness for screening/diagnostic purposes. Utilize portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to regular treatment room. Transfer or duplicate films/images as directed.
  • Follow PACs workflow procedures, working with electronic work lists, repair exceptions, ensuring all electronic images meet quality standards including the correct patient demographics and accession numbers. Ensure all images are acquired and all exams are completed in the RIS (Radiology Information System) in a timely fashion. Work independently in all areas, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of modality policy, procedures and workflow.
  • Initiate hard stop when appropriate and notify appropriate staff.
  • Monitor patients receiving contrast for adverse reactions and notify appropriate staff if needed. Explain procedures to the patient and family members. Answer patient and family questions, ensuring that concerns are addressed.
  • Assist physicians in the performance of specialized examinations by preparing equipment, syringes and contrast media, holding and turning patients, administering contrast media and passing instruments and supplies. Routinely lay out sterile supplies needed for special procedures. Understand the nature of the procedure to ensure proper imaging and that the proper equipment and supplies are available according to the Universal Protocol.
  • Ensure that images, examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes. Prepare images for reading by Radiologist.
  • Work as Radiographic Technologist and perform duties in other areas and/or modalities as needed. Maintain competence in standard radiologic procedures by rotating into radiology areas as assigned.
  • Report any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor. Take defective equipment out of service.
  • Maintain work area in clean and orderly condition and ensure that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials. Initiate requisitions for supplies as required.
  • Understand and practice ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.
