Job Summary:

The Welding Inspector will be responsible for implementing and maintaining quality programs and welding inspection. This role involves performing technical inspection duties and adhering to standard quality operational policies, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure welding procedure specifications are available and deployed in production during fabrication.
  • Assist engineering on weld symbols and drawings.
  • Create and implement welding procedures (WPS, PQR, WPQR).
  • Review welding procedure specifications to ensure they cover process and material requirements.
  • Review inspection requirements prior to welding to ensure they can be met.
  • Verify that specified base metals and welding filler metals are used before and during welding.
  • Ensure adequate and valid welder approvals are available and only approved welders are used in production.
  • Verify the use of welding consumables (electrodes, filler wires, consumable inserts, gases, fluxes, etc.).
  • Verify that dimensions, fit-up, and weld preparations are in accordance with specifications.
  • Monitor and inspect work performed by tack welders and welders/welding operators.
  • Inspect and evaluate welds according to specified inspection procedures, standards, codes, and drawings.
  • Record welding inspection results witnessed and prepare associated reports.
  • Assist the Quality Manager/Team in implementing, interpreting, and maintaining company quality assurance standards.
  • Maintain oversight of NDT testing inspectors to ensure conformity to company and customer weld inspection programs and regulations.
  • Provide Quality Manager with status reports on internal control of quality issues concerning fabrication processes and procedures.
  • Assist company personnel in determining the root cause of quality issues related to the welding process.
  • Perform weld quality audits.
Requirements:

  • Certified Welder Inspector – AWS D1.1
  • Minimum five years of knowledge of fabrication within the steel industry, with experience in a manufacturing, repair, or operating facility that involves welding.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, layout and fitting, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, weld testing, and fabrication planning is required.
  • Knowledge of the weldability of base metals (carbon steels and aluminum) is required.
  • Knowledge of the weldability of stainless steels would be an advantage.
  • Experience of welding inspection and related NDE methods (MT, PT, UT) are required.
  • Three years of quality system coordination or supervision in a manufacturing environment is required.
  • Ability to read blue prints, tape measures, calipers, and micrometers.
Physical Requirements:

  • Heights, confined spaces, manual lifting, standing, crouching, bending, repetitive motion.
  • Material handling.
Safety:

  • Keeps area clean.
  • Compliance with personal care, OSHA, and company safety rules.
Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, write, and understand oral and written instructions, information gathered from meters, dials, calibrated scales, visual display units.
