Job Description:

The City of DeLand is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician II to join our team. As a Laboratory Technician II, you will be responsible for performing routine field sampling and analysis under the general direction of the Chief Environmental Chemist. You will also perform technical work in a NELAP Certified Laboratory, setting up and adjusting laboratory apparatus, and assisting in the preparation of reagents for bacteriological and chemical analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine field sampling and analysis under the general direction of the Chief Environmental Chemist.
  • Perform technical work in a NELAP Certified Laboratory.
  • Set up and adjust laboratory apparatus.
  • Assist in the preparation of reagents for bacteriological and chemical analysis.
  • Conduct sampling and analyses of drinking water, wastewater, sludge, industrial pretreatment, and groundwater.
  • Able to perform competent related computer skills.
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory apparatus and glassware.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory inventory of chemicals, reagents, and glassware.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and perform miscellaneous functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Associates or Bachelor's from an accredited college or university with a major in Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Science or related field is required.
  • A minimum three (3) year documented experience as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.
Licenses and Special Requirements:
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified or get certified within one (1) year of hire.
Preferred Skills:
  • Class C Certification in Industrial Pretreatment from FDEP is preferred.
  • FOG I Certification from FDEP is preferred.
Language Skills:
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and write neatly.
  • Ability to deal with the general public in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.
Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Good physical condition is essential.
  • Ability to accept and understand directions.
  • Knowledge of laboratory practices concerning mixing of chemicals and reagents, preparation of stock solutions, and cleaning of glassware and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment such as analytical balances, microscopes, and autoclaves.
  • Knowledge of laboratory function and quality assurance tasks on media, equipment, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of the City of DeLand area (streets, roads, landmarks, etc.) is preferred.
  • Ability to learn methods and practices of modern water and wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to learn standard operating procedures as they relate to laboratory, field, and treatment facility operations.
  • Ability to teach other employees knowledge and skills to improve their work performance.
