Medical Coding Specialist

The University of Rochester is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our coding department, you will be responsible for abstracting and analyzing complex medical documentation to assign accurate procedural terminology and medical codes.
About the RoleThis role requires a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You will work closely with internal customers and external vendors to obtain greater specificity and/or clarification when documentation appears inconsistent or incomplete.
Responsibilities- Review and analyze complex medical documentation to assign accurate procedural terminology and medical codes.
- Use thorough knowledge of coding systems and system logic to review codes created by electronic charge capture and/or assign codes through medical record documentation.
- Abstract data and review codes for accuracy, performing system edit checks and correcting errors as needed.
- Respond to coding information requests from various sources and communicate document improvement opportunities and coding issues to providers, departments, and/or designated leaders.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A minimum of 2 years of experience as a medical coder, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
- An Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or a related field, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
We offer a competitive salary range of $23.06-$32.29 per hour, depending on experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
