The University of Rochester seeks a skilled Medical Records Coding Specialist to join our team in the abstraction and analysis of medical documentation. This advanced coder will work with various coding systems, including ICD-10-CM, E/M, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers, to assign accurate procedural terminology and medical codes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize thorough knowledge of coding systems and system logic to review and assign codes through medical record documentation.
  • Abstract data, review codes for accuracy, and perform system edit checks to correct errors as needed.
  • Communicate document improvement opportunities and coding issues to providers, department, and/or designated leaders for follow-up and resolution.
  • Collaborate with internal customers and external vendors to obtain greater specificity and/or clarification when documentation appears inconsistent or incomplete.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or a related field preferred.
  • 2 years of experience as a Medical Coder required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Additional coding experience in the area of assignment preferred.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, and working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy required.
