Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified Adjunct Faculty member to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Lake Tahoe Community College. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching adults at the low beginning and high beginning levels, and multiple modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online).

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned ESL courses, including preparation, evaluation, and consultation with students.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit attendance rosters and grade reports as required.
  • Follow course outlines and observe, support, and enforce district regulations, policies, and programs.
  • Provide a written course syllabus and refer students to college resources for counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students with requirements for successful achievement in the ESL area of expertise.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech.
  • Certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor.
  • OR Bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified above; and one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor.
  • OR Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language.
  • OR the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Working Conditions

The teaching assignment may require teaching lecture-discussion courses during day, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format. The assignments are based on departmental need on a quarter-by-quarter basis. Applicant will secure and maintain home internet access during the duration of their employment to ensure regular and consistent contact with students.
