We are seeking a highly qualified Adjunct Faculty member to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Lake Tahoe Community College. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching and learning, as well as a passion for working with diverse student populations.
Job Summary:The Adjunct Faculty member will be responsible for teaching ESL courses, including lecture-discussion classes, and will work collaboratively with the English as a Second Language department to develop and implement curriculum. The successful candidate will have experience teaching adults at the low beginning and high beginning levels, and will be able to utilize culturally responsive teaching and pedagogy to support students.
Responsibilities:- Teach assigned ESL courses, including lecture-discussion classes
- Develop and implement curriculum in collaboration with the English as a Second Language department
- Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in-class or online activities, evaluation of student work, and consultation with students
- Maintain accurate class and other records required by the district
- Submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due
- Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices
- Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies, and programs of the District
- Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course
- Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services
- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members' area of expertise
- Maintain an effective classroom environment and workspace
- Work cooperatively within the college community
- Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias
- Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of everyone
- Bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages OR Bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor
- OR Bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor
- OR Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language
- OR the equivalent
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
The Adjunct Faculty member will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with a diverse student population. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively in a team environment and will be able to adapt to changing circumstances.
Salary and Benefits:The salary for this position is $56.46 per hour, with benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as retirement savings options.
