About the Role

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking a highly skilled Health Science Specialist to join their Research service. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for the management of the animal research program and scientific equipment and purchasing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the animal research program, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive educational program for research personnel conducting research involving animals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external research integrity inquiries or complaints pertaining to animal research.
  • Prepare policies for complex programs pertinent to research involving animals.
  • Oversee the use, maintenance records, inventories, and purchasing of scientific research equipment.
  • Serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator and be responsible for the preparation, conduct, and administration of animal testing research grants, cooperative agreements, training, and/or public outreach pertaining to animal testing.
  • Design, oversee, implement, and/or participate in scientific research studies, including the development, supervision, and performing of experiments, surveys, investigations, or projects to develop information in areas such as disease prevention, pathology, pathophysiology, etiology, treatment, and control.
Work Schedule and Telework

The selected candidate will work a standard Monday-Friday schedule, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The position may be authorized for telework.

Requirements
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
Qualifications
  • To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Individual Occupational Requirement: This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement. It requires a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
