POSITION OVERVIEW
The individual in this role is tasked with overseeing the welfare of residents within a designated smoking area of the facility. This position requires an understanding of residents identified as high-risk smokers.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. The candidate must possess the ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to provide care and supervision to ensure the safety of residents at all times.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills.
  • Maintains good emotional, mental, and physical health with sound judgment and high standards.
  • Exhibits courtesy when interacting with residents, families, and staff.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance suitable for resident care.
  • Desire to work with geriatric residents and address their current and future needs.
  • Must be punctual and ready to begin assigned duties as scheduled.
  • Willingness to work preferred shifts and assist on other shifts as necessary to ensure adequate staffing.
  • Ability to function cooperatively as a team member within the Nursing Department and across other departments.
  • Capability to monitor residents in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to adapt to on-the-job training and adhere to facility standards, assisting residents, managing equipment and supplies, and understanding basic safety practices.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations or evacuations.
  • Must follow the directions of supervising staff and complete a pre-employment and annual Tuberculosis screening examination.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Smoke Monitor/Smoke Aide operates under established assignments for each shift but must be flexible to accept changes and additional responsibilities as required. Collaboration with fellow staff is essential to ensure safe practices for residents and staff.
  • Sign in according to facility protocol.
  • Maintain an updated list of residents identified as unsafe smokers and recommended interventions.
  • Ensure the smoke area is free from oxygen at all times.
  • Monitor all residents in the smoking area, ensuring safety and intervening as necessary.
  • Report any safety concerns to the Charge Nurse or Director of Nurses.
  • Provide assistance to residents as needed.
  • Remain in the assigned area until the unsafe smoker has finished and left or is relieved by another staff member.
  • Keep the smoking area clean and free from debris.
  • During adverse weather conditions, limit residents' exposure and encourage indoor smoking if available.
  • Assist residents in planning their smoking times to ensure they receive adequate care and can participate in other activities.
  • Report any changes in resident conditions or concerns from residents or families to the licensed nurse.
  • Maintain a safe environment at all times.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
  • Attend required training sessions, meetings, and educational activities.
  • Adhere to the Patient's Bill of Rights and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Engage with residents and families, co-workers, and clinical staff in a supportive and calm manner.
  • Be aware of Patient Abuse Reporting Law and participate in the orientation of new staff positively.
