Position Overview

The Advanced Care Practitioner in Cardiac Surgery (CRNP or PA) collaborates with physicians to deliver extensive medical care to patients post-cardiac procedures, including coronary revascularization, valve surgeries, cardiac bypass, minimally invasive techniques, congenital heart corrections, and ventricular assist device placements. The majority of services are provided in the cardiac intensive care unit at DCH Health System.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conducts thorough assessments of patients' physical and mental health through comprehensive examinations and medical history evaluations.
  2. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests to evaluate patient health issues and needs.
  3. Prescribes and manages medical therapies and treatments in line with established protocols and practice scope, while advising on health risk behavior modifications.
  4. Develops and executes patient-centered treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based practices, and collaboration with healthcare teams.
  5. Provides guidance to patients and families on medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion strategies.
  6. Keeps detailed records of patient treatment plans and outcomes, ensuring timely referrals when necessary.
  7. Offers specialized consultation services related to the practitioner's expertise.
  8. Engages in follow-up care for patients both before and after surgical procedures, and may participate in hospital rounds or emergency department visits.
  9. May be required to fulfill additional patient care responsibilities based on departmental needs.
  10. Contributes to hospital quality improvement initiatives and performance enhancement programs.
  11. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards set by state and federal authorities.

Qualifications
  1. Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  2. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse Practitioner in Alabama or as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
  3. Must maintain or be eligible for DEA registration.
  4. Experience in an acute care hospital setting is required.
  5. Preferred experience in cardiovascular and critical care.
  6. Strong verbal communication skills for effective interaction with patients and team members.
  7. Proficiency in reading, writing, and understanding English is essential.
Working Conditions

Ability to utilize medical supplies and equipment essential for job functions. The role is situated in a dynamic acute care environment, necessitating travel between hospital and outpatient clinics. Availability for occasional night and weekend duties is required. Physical demands include walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing, and pulling, with the ability to lift up to 75 pounds for patient and equipment handling. Proficiency in English communication is necessary. Must possess normal or corrected vision and hearing. Quick responsiveness to changes in patient conditions is essential. Potential exposure to communicable diseases may occur.

Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to what is necessary for job performance, with sharing restricted to work-related purposes. Access to PHI is controlled based on job responsibilities and is secured through user ID and password protocols.

Physical presence at the workplace is mandatory.
