As a Surgical Technologist II at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in the surgical team by preparing and organizing the operating room, selecting and passing instruments during surgical procedures, and maintaining aseptic conditions. You will work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth and efficient surgical experience for patients.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist physicians during surgery as a member of the surgical team.
- Pass instruments and supplies as directed, maintaining sterile technique for each procedure.
- Assist in draping the patient and providing proper retraction of tissue.
- Hold retractors and apply Bovie to clamps as directed by the surgeon.
- Assist with sponging, suctioning, and performing sponge, needle/sharp, and instrument counts.
- Prepare suture for closure of surgical incisions and apply proper surgical dressings.
- Recognize and respond to acute emergency situations following established procedures and policies.
- Hold and position video cameras under the direction of the surgeon.
- Check surgeons' preference cards and prepare sterile setups.
- Count with circulating nurses and be accountable for items required for documentation.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and keep adequate sutures and supplies ready.
- Keep Mayo stands and back tables neat and orderly, ensuring no loose needles on the field.
- Confirm all specimens with the surgeon and hand them off to the circulator.
- Take instruments to the workroom for washing or place them in carts to return to SPD.
- Remove suction bottles, dispose of contaminated instruments, and adhere to methods of sterilization, disinfecting, antisepsis, and aseptic techniques.
- Packaging, storing, and dispensing surgery supplies, as well as maintaining environmental safety.
- One year of operating room or military equivalent experience in a scrub role within the last two years or recent completion of an operating room training program.
- Surgical Technologist Certificate within six months of hire from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Ability to scrub all types of surgical cases except open heart.
- This is a variable position with variable start times.
- Ten-hour shifts are available.
