Lactation Support Specialist

Job Responsibilities
As a Lactation Support Specialist, you will provide essential breastfeeding guidance and support to clients enrolled in the WIC program. Your primary duties will include:
- Offering encouragement, information, and counseling to both prenatal and breastfeeding participants.
- Delivering anticipatory education regarding the typical progression of breastfeeding.
- Facilitating support group meetings and collaborating with nutritionists during individual and group sessions.
- Engaging with participants at scheduled intervals in accordance with WIC policies to offer advice, motivation, and information to sustain lactation. You will also be available to assist participants outside of standard clinic hours.
- Identifying issues or potential challenges that may require referral to a nutritionist or a WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE).
- Encouraging participation in nutrition education classes through various outreach methods including clinic visits, phone calls, and mail.
- Maintaining accurate records of client interactions, completing monthly activity reports, and fulfilling other documentation requirements as mandated by the health department.
- Participating in community outreach initiatives aimed at WIC participants, especially during Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and organizing local breastfeeding promotion events.
- Performing additional tasks as assigned by your supervisor.
Employment Conditions
Wage employees are subject to specific employment conditions, including:
- Employment is at the discretion of the appointing authority.
- Ongoing employment is contingent upon available funding and business needs.
- Wage employees do not receive benefits typically available to salaried employees.
- Compensation is provided only for hours worked, with a maximum of 29 hours per week on average.
- Wage employees may not exceed 1,500 hours of work within the designated measurement period.
- Wage employees can apply for classified positions initiated for recruitment.
- Should a wage employee transition to a classified position, they may purchase retirement credit for their time as a wage employee.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should demonstrate a solid understanding of:
- Basic human lactation principles.
- Breastfeeding practices and techniques.
- Various positioning methods for breastfeeding.
- Fundamentals of breastfeeding management.
- Manual expression of breast milk and its proper collection and storage.
- Effective communication skills.
Additional Considerations
Candidates should be able to:
- Instruct individuals and groups effectively.
- Recognize breastfeeding-related issues and make suitable referrals or interventions.
