Job Overview

Hillsborough County is seeking a highly qualified and dedicated Lead Head Start Teacher to join our team. As a Lead Teacher, you will be responsible for providing a safe and supportive educational environment for preschool-age children, while also developing and implementing individualized lesson plans that meet federal performance standards.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, and implement daily lesson plans that provide for educational and enrichment activities for preschool-age children.
  • Screen and assess preschool-age children to determine developmental/educational needs and develop and implement individual education plans that comply with federal performance standards.
  • Monitor meal and snack periods, classroom and restroom activities, and playground activities to ensure a safe environment for young children.
  • Document children's progress or lack thereof and complete all required manual and computerized forms and reports in accordance with federal requirements.
  • Initiate referrals to the appropriate Lead Teacher by submission of required paperwork.
  • Plan classroom activities for parent and community volunteers.
  • Attend and participate in workshops and other meetings to acquire and disseminate information.
  • Communicate with parents through parent conferences, written correspondence, telephone, and home visits to apprise them of child's progress, upcoming events, classroom activities, individual education plan changes, and other relevant information.
  • Conduct health checks on children for health concerns, including ringworm, head lice, or other health conditions, and report to appropriate nurse.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect to designated state agency.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee field trips for assigned children.
  • Request supplies and equipment to be ordered for use by children in the classroom.
  • Serve as a bus monitor in the transportation of children and engage children in song and other developmentally appropriate activities during ride.
  • Assist in the transportation of special needs children by lifting child into seat and fastening safety belt.
  • Inspect classrooms and grounds to ensure the safety, orderliness, sanitation, and cleanliness of facilities.
  • Discuss plans and coordinate concerns regarding the child and family with other Head Start staff.
  • Perform First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as needed.
  • Coordinate and oversee the daily activities of an assigned Head Start/Early Head Start Center to ensure that center complies with federal performance standards and local licensing/health/fire inspection requirements.
  • Supervise the work of subordinate staff, by scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance to ensure work activities are properly carried out.
  • Monitor food service and supplies for adequate inventory.
  • Order supplies and equipment to be used by special needs children in the classroom.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
