Job Summary

White Plains Hospital is seeking a skilled Building Services Aide to provide a clean and safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing various tasks, including cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep of hospital facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to hospital performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
  • Receive daily assignments and report to designated areas.
  • Select and use cleaning materials and supplies, load service carts, and prepare equipment and cleaning solutions.
  • Follow prescribed health guidelines to accomplish assigned responsibilities.
  • Clean equipment at the end of shifts and notify supervisors of any repairs needed.
  • Report mechanical failures or negative conditions to supervisors and use reporting mechanisms.
  • Participate in emergency procedures and perform assigned tasks.
  • Perform periodic irregular duties as requested and/or assigned.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in carrying out tasks and determining priorities.
  • Complete assigned tasks within appropriate time periods.
  • Operate autoclaves, when assigned, in a prescribed manner to properly treat medical waste.
  • Interface with boiler mechanics to ensure observation of safety regulations when operating autoclaves.
  • Maintain and care for hospital grounds, rake leaves, pick up refuse for disposal, and spread salt and participate in snow removal as required.
  • Perform all aspects of cleaning spills related to patients, visitors, and staff, including liquids, food, bodily fluids, and fecal material.
  • Empty linen hampers and dispose of soiled linen in specialty areas as required by section needs.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • No formal experience required; on-the-job training provided.
  • 1 year of experience working directly with customers strongly preferred.

  • Ability to cooperate with a wide range of hospital personnel and communicate with employees, patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Ability to adapt to different situations and assignments.
  • Must be able to complete assigned responsibilities with limited/no supervision.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods, with bending, stooping, reaching up, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to perform moderately heavy work, involving pushing, pulling, or lifting with considerable walking and standing.
  • Manual and finger dexterity needed for assorted tasks such as floor maintenance, cleaning, and moving furniture.
  • Must have the ability to perform routine repetitive tasks and follow written and oral instructions.
  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks.
