Job Summary:

The Tax Managing Director is responsible for providing expert tax advice to clients, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to minimize tax burden and compliance costs, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations. As the primary client contact for complex tax issues, the Tax Managing Director applies industry-specific knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate potential risks, and make top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
  • Manage engagements to achieve engagement management metrics, practice hands-on client service delivery, and ensure overall client service by encouraging team adherence to tax quality policies.
  • Identify when research is needed, clearly frame issues to be researched, and clearly report analysis.
  • Apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48, and apply technical expertise regarding income tax provisions in international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock-based compensation issues.
  • Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients' current and future taxes.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation, including individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, and R&D tax benefits.
  • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, including reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as the situation dictates.
  • Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
  • Act as a Career Advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates, senior associates, and managers.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
  • Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Experience:

  • Ten or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.

License/Certifications:

  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.

Software:

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills.
  • Capacity to work well in a team environment.
  • Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to compose written tax advice.
  • Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

California Range: $190,000 - $335,000
Colorado Range: $170,000 - $225,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $205,000 - $250,000
Washington Range: $180,000 - $240,000
