POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Perioperative Services Manager and the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical environment. This position is responsible for the surgical scrub duties during various minor and major surgical interventions, tailored to the individual's competencies across different surgical specialties. The Surgical Technologist assists medical professionals in a range of clinical and technical tasks, ensuring adherence to hospital philosophy, practice standards, and regulatory requirements.

Classification: Non-exempt

QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. BLS Certification is mandatory. Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred, along with a minimum of two years of experience in an operating room setting.


OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

This role involves Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent contact with chemical hazards, and potential exposure to radiation.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Make informed decisions regarding the sterilization of equipment and instruments.
  2. Dispose of biohazardous waste according to institutional protocols.
  3. Maintain cleanliness in accordance with OR housekeeping standards.
  4. Facilitate patient care and manage patient flow effectively.
  5. Uphold patient confidentiality at all times.
  6. Create a secure environment conducive to surgical procedures.
  7. Utilize medical equipment safely and effectively.
  8. Contribute to cost-effective patient care strategies.
  9. Implement medical and surgical asepsis principles in line with national standards and hospital policies.
  10. Ensure the physical safety of patients during procedures.
  11. Account for surgical items such as sponges, needles, and instruments.
  12. Assist surgeons during scrubbed procedures.
  13. Prepare supplies for upcoming surgical cases.
  14. Exhibit a collaborative attitude towards colleagues, management, patients, and visitors.
  15. Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with OSHA and infection control standards.
  16. Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to sterile storage.
  17. Adhere strictly to facility policies regarding Immediate Use Sterilization.
  18. Check the operating room for cleanliness and the availability of necessary supplies and equipment at the start of each day.
  19. Utilize surgeon preference cards to select appropriate packs, supplies, and instruments.
  20. Perform surgical hand scrubs and don sterile gowns and gloves following established protocols.
  21. Maintain proper sterile technique when preparing the surgical team and draping patients.
  22. Conduct sponge, instrument, and needle counts as per policy.
  23. Handle specimens according to established procedures.
  24. Transport instruments to the decontamination area using appropriate techniques.
  25. Return unused sterile supplies and instruments to their designated places at the end of the day.
  26. Restock operating rooms to maintain established PAR levels.
  27. Attend all departmental meetings or review presented materials.
  28. Keep supervisors informed of work progress.
  29. Comply with facility Standards of Behavior and complete all required educational assignments within the designated timeframe.
