POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general oversight of the Perioperative Services Manager and the direct guidance of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in the surgical environment, ensuring the surgical scrub responsibilities are met for various minor and major surgical interventions based on individual competencies across surgical specialties. This role involves assisting physicians and nursing staff in a range of medical and technical procedures, all while adhering to the hospital's philosophy, practice standards, and regulatory requirements.
Reports To: OR Department Manager
Classification: Non-exempt
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. BLS Certification is mandatory. Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred, along with two years of prior experience as an operating room technician.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
This position involves Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards, and potential radiation hazards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Make informed decisions regarding the sterilization of equipment and instruments.
- Dispose of biohazardous waste in accordance with institutional policies.
- Perform housekeeping duties as per OR housekeeping standards.
- Facilitate patient care and ensure smooth patient flow.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Create a secure environment conducive to surgical procedures.
- Utilize medical equipment safely and effectively.
- Contribute to cost-effective patient care solutions.
- Implement medical and surgical asepsis principles in line with recognized national standards and hospital-specific policies.
- Ensure the physical safety of patients.
- Account for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies during procedures.
- Assist surgeons during scrubbed cases.
- Prepare supplies for upcoming surgical cases.
- Exhibit a cooperative work attitude towards colleagues, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
- Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards.
- Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to sterile storage, following manufacturer instructions.
- Adhere strictly to the facility's policies regarding Immediate Use Sterilization.
- Check operating rooms for cleanliness and availability of supplies and equipment at the start of each day.
- Utilize surgeon preference cards to select necessary packs, supplies, and instruments.
- Perform surgical hand scrubs and don sterile gowns and gloves according to established protocols.
- Maintain proper sterile technique during gowning, gloving, and draping of patients.
- Conduct sponge, instrument, and needle counts in accordance with counting policies.
- Handle specimens according to established procedures.
- Transport instruments to the decontamination area using appropriate techniques and in compliance with established policies.
- Store unused sterile supplies and instruments at the end of the day.
- Restock operating rooms to established PAR levels.
- Attend all department meetings or review presented materials.
- Keep supervisors informed of work progress.
- Comply with facility Standards of Behavior and complete all required educational assignments within designated timelines.
